Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake declared President Mahinda Rajapaksa the winner of Presidential Election held on 26th January 2010.

While President Rajapaksa secured 6,015,934 or 57.88 per cent of the vote, the opposition common candidate Sarath Fonseka received 4,173,185 votes or 40.15 per cent.

The election is the first national election held since the country's victory over terrorism in May 2009. The incumbent President, representing the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) called for the polls two years ahead of the end of his six-year term stating that he wanted a fresh mandate after the liberation of the North and East where no peaceful election could be held for the last three decades.
