Fifteen people were killed and another 46, including Posts and Telecommunication Minister Mahinda Wijesekera were injured in a suicide attack which targeted the National Milad-un-Nabi festival at the Jumma Mosque in Godapitiya, Akuressa (Matara District).

Several Ministers of the government, representatives of other Religions, including Venerable Buddhist monks, Rev. Fr. Charles Hewawasam-the Administrator of Matara Shrine, Religious Sisters and thousands of Muslim devotees participated in this
Religious programme. People of Sri Lanka have been looking forward for this kind of religious harmony among all and Bishop Harold Anthony says, " these acts of terrorism severely destabilize the peace and solidarity needed to build a better civilization in Sri Lanka "

PRESS RELEASE -

STATEMENT ON THE BOMB EXPLOSION AT AKURESSA

It is with deep regret that we learnt of the tragic death of 15 civilians killed in a bomb blast on the Milad-un-Nabi Muslim Festival to mark the birthday of Holy Prophet Mohammed, at Godapitiya, Akuressa Many others too have been injured in the incident.

We strongly condemn this reprehensible and outrageous act of terrorism closer to a Muslim Shrine and on a day sacred to the Muslim Community and extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families of all killed in the blast. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

This is not the first time that we have witnessed such cruelty targeting religious communities and sacred places and the loss of human life which as Catholics we always consider sacred. We appeal for an end to all acts of terrorism, which gravely offend the human family and severely destabilize the peace and solidarity needed to build a better civilization in Sri Lanka.

This terrorist attack comes at a time when there is an urgent need to build a bridge between Dondra Point to Point Pedro - between South and North, where there is equality, fraternity, justice and peace. Therefore, We reiterate a vision of Peace with Justice for Sri Lanka.
