His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo presided together with the Auxiliary Bishops His Hlordships Bishop Emmanuel Fernando and Bishop Maxwell Silva at the Thanksgiving Mass held at the Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka, Tewatta on 29th October 2013,on the 25th Death Anniversary of His Eminence Late Thomas Benjamin Cardinal Cooray, the Servant of God.
His Excellency Archbishop Joseph Spiteri Apostolic Nuncio in Sri Lanka, Archbishop Emeriti Nicholas Marcus Fernando, Archbishop Oswald Gomis, Mons. Renato Kucic, Several Episcopal Vicars, Priests, Religious, people from different parishes and school children participated in the Holy Mass.
Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, Episcopal Vicar preached during the Holy Mass about His Eminence Late Thomas Benjamin Cardinal Cooray, the Servant of God, as a perfect example of faith and a shining lamp of Christian living.
On the occasion of the 25th Death Anniversary, First Day Postal Cover was issued by The Philatelic Bureau of the Department of Posts, Sri Lanka, after the Mass.
After the Eucharistic Celebration, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith conducted the prayer service at the grave of His Eminence and people paid their tribute with flowers at the grave site.
His Eminence Thomas Benjamin Cardinal Cooray from the Parish of Periyamulla, Negombo, was born on 28th December 1901, was ordained a priest on 23rd June 1929 in the Congregation of Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Thereafter he was appointed as the Co-adjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo on 12th December 1945 and succeeded as the Archbishop of Colombo on 26th July 1947.
He was elevated as a Cardinal on 22nd February 1965 by Pope Paul VI.
His Eminence was called to Eternal Rest in the Lord on 29th October 1988 and his mortal remains were buried in the crypt in the Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka, Tewatta on 03rd November 1988.
