Your Grace,
Rev. Fathers, Brothers, Sisters,
Distinguished Guests,
Distinguished Old Boys,
Representatives of the Education Ministry,
Dear Parents and my dear Students,
We are honoured to have you with us at this our 108th Annual Prize Giving. We are living in momentous times in the history of this country. Times which are fraught with doubt and suspicion, hopes and aspirations. Never in our history even as a fledgling nation did there be this sense of anxiety as to whether the ship of State buffeted by storms both political and economic is being steered in the right direction. Yet it is certain that Almighty God has chosen you to shepherd his flock at this hour where there is apparent uncertainty and as a result a sense of uneasiness which raises the same question as it did in Israel of old, “Watchman, what of the night”?
Your wide pastoral experience, coupled with the exulted position held by you as a Papal Nuncio, your versatility in languages, appointment as Secretary General of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, a member of the Federation of Asian Bishops’, Membership you hold in the Supreme Committee of the Pontifical Mission Societies are an indication of the trust and confidence the Holy See has in you. These are but only a few of the positions you hold in the Universal Church as well as Asia.
Well do we remember your efforts to save our nation from an economic crisis by taking with you the representatives of the other major faiths viz. Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam to meet His Holiness the Pope, Benedict XVI to request him to intervene in the threatened withdrawal of the GSP facility by the European Union, something for which the Government and the entire nation are grateful to you. After your student days at the National Seminary in Kandy you proceeded to the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, obtained your Baccalaureate in Theology and Licentiate in Sacred Scripture and obtained a Special Certificate in Biblical Studies from the Hebrew University, all of which bodes of what honours lay ahead.
You interest in the field of education is displayed by being appointed as a Member of the University Council of Sabaragamuwa , being a Lecturer (Catechetics) Kalutara Training College and being a winner of a medallion at the Thomas Aquinas University College, California, U.S.A.
We are confident that your interest in this College will serve as an inspiration to the Academic Staff, the students, the non academic staff and all the Old Boys and parents and well wishers. Your presence here today will be the binding cord of our reverence and loyalty to you and the Church.
The long awaited hostilities between the warring factions has ceased. Yet it is no guarantee that peace has dawned. The silencing of guns and the utterance of bold promises are no guarantee that peace has dawned in the hearts of men which is where peace rightly belongs. True peace must reign in the hearts and minds of people. There should not exist fear, doubt, suspicion, anxiety and hatred in the minds of men. We cannot and must not remain silent until peace with justice is established. A fractured society will never be a united one. Unity of all persons in heart, mind, body and spirit must prevail for there to be progress. Grandiose plans will be of no avail if the citizens are not united as one. It is indeed a laudable step that the hostilities have ceased, the question however remains as to “What of the future”? Will the basic freedoms of the people as enshrined in the Constitution be guaranteed?. It is here that the Executive, the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Fourth Estate must play their respective parts with responsibility and malice to none.
The moment of truth has dawned. Will there be politicians who could rise above petty politics and display mature statesmanship for the future of generations yet unborn? Unless and until every citizen feels secure and his basic needs met no one can say that he or she has done his duty. The basic tenet of Christianity is “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:11.) Let us lead the way.
It is sad but true that we live today in a world of dissension, conflicts and war. Distrust, disbelief, disunity and dishonesty have become the order of the day. Moral principles have lost their meaning, their value and distinctiveness. Absolute right and absolute wrong are now a matter of what the majority is doing.
As a result of this, what do we see in today’s society? Bribery, corruption, deceit, replete with fraud at all levels.
As violence is met with violence, anger with anger, hatred with hatred, the spiral of viciousness Escalates. Violence and terror have a cause which begins in the mind of individuals. They have a solution which also must begin in the minds of individuals. It is only through an appeal to individual minds with religious atmosphere that this dreadful spiral can be unwound. We need an approach that will generate forgiveness in answer to wrongdoing, love in answer to anger, forbearance in answer to provocation and utmost tolerance.
Given the rapid changes brought about by globalization, it is no longer sufficient to simply equip our students with the skills required for a particular type of work. Rather, it is imperative that we cultivate adaptability and creative thinking. As a dynamic institution, with a tradition of excellence we aim to help our students become “adaptive experts” who anticipate and participate in change.
The Church is very specific in its statements on education. Canon Law on Catholic Schools states that “Education must pay regard to the formation of the whole person, so that all may attain their eternal destiny and at the same time promote the common good of society. There must be the closest cooperation between parents and teachers to whom they entrust their children to be educated. In fulfilling their task, teachers are to collaborate closely with the parents and willingly listen to them: associations and meetings of parents are to be set up and held in high esteem”.
The faithful are to promote catholic schools, doing everything possible to help in establishing and maintaining them. Formation and education in a catholic school must be based on the principles of catholic doctrine, and the teachers must be outstanding in true doctrine and uprightness of life.
It was His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI who stated that “education tends to be broadly reduced to the transmission of specific abilities or capacities for doing, while people endeavour to satisfy the desire for happiness of the new generations by showering them with consumer goods and transitory gratification. Thus, both parents and teachers are easily tempted to abdicate their educational duties and even no longer to understand what their role, or rather, the mission entrusted to them. Continuing His Holiness added “Yet, in this way we are not offering to young people, to the young generations, what it is our duty to pass on to them. Moreover, we owe them true values which give life a foundation”.
The mission of the Catholic Church on Catholic Schools is very clear and it is the duty & the responsibility of ever Catholic to uphold & support them.
The World Congress of Catholic Educators some time ago dedicated itself to building “A New Person for a New World” The new persons are persons who become more and more what God has planned for them to be, accepting their strengths and weaknesses, Him, their creator, as they move out to face the future whatever it may be persons who are conscious and dedicated to their duties and rights, persons who are citizens of their countries as well as of the global situation.
Among all educational instruments the school has a special importance. It is our aim to create for the school community a special atmosphere animated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth grow according to the new creatures they were made through baptism as they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith.
Are we catering to this new man?
The present century provides highly developed means of communication and for the circulation and storage of information. Today education must simultaneously provide maps of a complex world and the compass that will enable people to find their way in it. In this view of the future traditional response to knowledge based education are no longer appropriate. Each individual must be equipped to seize learning opportunities throughout life, to broaden his knowledge and skills and adapt to a changing , complex and interdependent word. According to UNESCO’s Report of the International Commission on Education for the 21st century, Education must be organized around four fundamental types of learning - The Four Pillars of Education.
LEARNING TO KNOW. This consists mainly in learning how to learn, select information, how to formulate opinions and apply knowledge.
LEARNING TO DO. Employers of today choose persons who are creative and who in addition acquired vocational skills have an aptitude for team work, initiative and are totally committed.
LEARNING TO BE. In the ever changing world in which social and economic innovation appears as the main driving force there should be the development of imagination and creativity. People must have the opportunity to develop independent and creative thinking which will make it possible for them to control their lives.
LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER. This is a major challenge which education faces today. This is the task of teaching the truth about people, that we all depend on one another. That we are all different yet similar at the same time. That we are to live together in peace.
So what is the profile of the graduate from school need by the 21st century? Are we on the correct direction?
After careful & through study of Church documents and report on four pillars of education we have drawn up our ten year vision plan. With expert old boys from different fields, invited by me who have discussed for eight months and have formulated the plan.
Today, Sri Lankan society is in the throes of massive and rapid social and economic change. Looking beyond our shores, we perceive a world hardly less beset by alteration. The march of science brings new hopes and new fears, while technology, universal in its adaptation, proclaims moral challenges that are hard to quantify, yet must be tackled by responsible people of all faiths. Similar challenges are posed by the interpenetration of cultures in an increasingly globalized world. A school such as St. Joseph’s, which seeks to fit men’s minds for society, must take cognizance of all these factors, determine, if it can, the trends of change and equip its students with the knowledge, skills and moral amour they will need to live, achieve and thrive in the world they shall inherit.
With this end in view we launched the Ten Year Vision Plan with the aim of making St. Joseph’s produce exemplary citizens willing and able to make a positive contribution in all spheres they inhabit: domestic, private, public, commercial, professional or entrepreneurial.
The Model Josephian is in terms appropriate to his age and level of maturity and experience, a complete and fully realized character. Analyzing this character helps identify the aspects of facets of personality and accomplishment on which the College must focus in its role as educator and mentor.
Spiritual development
Intellect and literacy
Physical fitness
Mind Power
Life skills &values
Social intelligence
Sportsmanship
The Model Josephian will emerge through a value based education with discipline within a Catholic environment. In each of the areas shown the Model Josephian is defined by a set of indicators, some quantitative, others qualitative.
To achieve the Model Josephian it is incumbent to have the Model Teacher. Available evidence suggests that the main driver of variance in students integral formation at school is the quality of the teachers. The quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. Our school system should have a policy to help students to learn better, and, teachers to teach better. This will result in schools operating and performing effectively. A teacher while teaching must learn.
At St. Joseph’s we want our Teachers to be innovative. Their achievements are supported by on going coaching. We embrace and actively reinforce diversity, and provide a winning and open environment where outstanding Teachers can realize their dreams in order to achieve these lofty ideals
The vision of St. Joseph’s College is those of a community growing together in a faith relationship in Christ, transmitting Christian values and thus forming a part of the saving mission of the Church. It is a place where human knowledge, enriched and enlivened by faith is shared by teachers, students and parents, in a spirit of love and freedom. St. Joseph’s will continue to be a place of integral formation by means of a systematic and critical assimilation of local, national and global culture.
Individual subjects contribute in their own particular methods to the student’s total growth. They enable the pupils to assimilate skills, knowledge, intellectual methods and moral and social attitudes all of which help to develop each one’s personality and lead him to take his place as a active member of the community. The aim of each subject is not merely the attainment of knowledge but the acquisition of values and the discovery of truth in a value based education.
We seek to provide the means by which the full potential of each of our students and that of the school community is realized. These are Faith, Academic, Community and Personal Development.
Excellence is the hallmark of a College of distinction. Excellence requires total quality commitment which does characterize every activity at St. Joseph’s. Our Teachers are a breed apart, and, to this end we are proud of our unique culture and unblemished heritage of a 114 years.
It is in this spirit, and with every hope of success, that we invite further inputs and support both for the planning process and for the implementation that will, we believe, see our beloved College rise to an eminence even greater than that it now commands, amply fulfilling its Vision and Mission as well as the hopes and conviction of its founding fathers.
The Josephian Vision of Education
The Josephian Vision of Education plan was lunched on the 31st of July 2009. Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis was the chief guest & signed the document. Large number of old boys were present.
A group of Josephians have been working with me since July 2008 on a Vision Plan for the College. We expect that, through our efforts and those of our fellow old boys, staff and benefactors, the plan will be finalized and implementation commence in 2010. We have thus designated 2010 Vision Year at St. Joseph’s College. It is also a fundraising year for the College, and we hope to raise at least Rs. 100 million for expenditures based on the Vision Plan by the end of the year.
A very broad, overarching programme – what we might call a plan for a plan – was developed. This was founded on the concept of ‘values-based education’. According to this concept, we train young people not only to pass tests and achieve good grades at public examinations, but also, as Piaget said, to ‘train young people to think for themselves’ and to ensure that such thinking is based on a solid understanding of the world and a strong ethical foundation. This involves new thinking, unfettered by old biases and role models. The idea is that education should enable the student to act rationally, thoughtfully and morally in every situation, rather than simply imparting lists of facts.

To all Head Mistresses, Sectional Heads and Class Teachers and I offer my deep gratitude for their devotion to duty, maintenance of discipline, efforts to improve standards all round and inculcate the right values and healthy attitudes in our students.
I wish too place on record my appreciation and thanks to all members of the Academic Staff of the College. Their deep sense of commitment and loyalty in striving to achieve the objectives of making learning an Odyssey is admirable. Every attempt is made by us to broaden their horizons of becoming the “Perfect Teacher”. In this connection, we place equal emphasis on each one of them irrespective of the class they teach. They are presented with opportunities to better their skills by way of seminars, interaction and other facilities. Our teachers continue to learn bearing in mind “Only Quality Teachers can Produce Quality Students” & “ to teach is to touch life forever”.
Great teachers help create great students. In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support both new and experienced educators.
It is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn from each other. Ongoing professional development keeps teachers up-to-date on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more. The best professional development is ongoing, experiential, collaborative, and connected to and derived from working with students and understanding their culture.
The teachers get many opportunities for professional development in variety of topics.
Congratulations on your professional achievement.
