Statement of concern regarding Anti-Conversion Legislature

Free media Movement (FMM) notes with serious concern the moves being made with regard to introducing anti religious conversion legislation in Sri Lanaka. While freedom of religion is a fundamental human right universally affirmed under international law, as well as guaranteed by our Constitution, FMM notes with particular concern, the impact of anti religious legislation on freedom of expression and thought.

The right to disseminate information regarding a religion, or to propagate a teaching, is central to a society that respects free speech. To introduce legislation that adversely impinges on the free expression on religious belief is wholly inimical to free speech, thought and expression, and it is accordingly FMM’s view that such legislation is contrary to democratic principals.

FMM does not believe that the concerns raised by sections of some religions against the activities of some other religions can be addressed through the introduction of legislation that overshadows fundamental human rights. Experiences has shown that the suppression of views and ideas, whether religious or other wise in content, serves to undermine democracy and individual freedom, and will not serve the address the mischief that is sought to remedies.

FMM strongly calls upon the government to desist from presenting its Protection of Religious Act to parliament, and requests all political parties to refrain from supporting such legislation that undermine constitutionally protected fundamental rights of the people of Sri Lanka.
